A group of seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
